What are IICRC Standards?
According to the IICRC website: The IICRC is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and accredited standards developer. ANSI is responsible for overseeing the development of national consensus standards and verifying that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have been met by the standard’s developer.
What is IICRC’s role as a Standards Developing Organization?
It handles all the procedural work involved in developing the standards, which involves many steps including: putting together a Consensus Body (committee of volunteers who write the standards); administering the online workspace; scheduling and organizing all web and in-person meetings; coordinating the public review process; conducting the Consensus Body approval ballot; addressing any appeals as needed; editing the document; getting ANSI approval; and then publishing the final standard. As one of the first organizations to serve as a resource to others in the inspection, cleaning, and restoration industry, they are set out to create a set of best practices—or standards—to connect our industries together. Board Up Services After a Fire Damage

House affected with fire and has wooden boards on all the windows. Board-up Fire

SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo offers board ups at any time of the day regular business hours or after hours.

When it occurs in a commercial property, there may still be viable stock on the premises. If products that appear viable remain in the building, you should consider boarding up. These items may require assessment and cleaning and may not be fit for sale, but having them properly processed rather than stolen can be helpful for insurance purposes.

Owners will want to protect electronics and other valuables. Depending on the extent of the fire damage, you may be able to restore some electronics or other valuable property to working condition.

If the structure of your property has sustained extensive damage, you should try to keep the elements out to prevent additional damage. Exposure to additional water, wind, or sunlight can compound the damage caused by smoke residue and soot.

Limit soot damage. When soot gets embedded into carpeting or upholstery, it can be much more difficult to restore these materials to a pre-fire condition.

Emergencies happen when you least expect it.

SERVPRO Tips for Home Owners to Help Identify Mold

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

Mold is everywhere. It’s a type of fungus that grows from tiny spores that float in the air. It can grow almost anywhere that spores land and find moisture and a comfortable temperature, between 40 and 100 degrees F. Typically that includes about every damp place in your home.

You can easily spot the most visible type of mold, called mildew, which begins as tiny, usually black spots but often grows into larger colonies. It’s the black stuff you see in the grout lines in your shower, on damp walls, and outdoors on the surfaces of deck boards and painted siding, especially in damp and shady areas.

Mildew is a surface type of mold that won’t damage your home’s structure. But other types of mold cause rot.  If the wood is soft or crumbles, the fungi have taken hold and rot has begun. We’ll show you how to remove mold from wood in a few steps.

If you have a high concentration of mold, you may smell it. If you detect the typical musty odor, check for mold on damp carpets, damp walls, damp crawlspaces and wet wood under your floors, wet roof sheathing and other damp areas.

If you property has mold call the professionals at SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo (805)541-1271 "Like it never even happened"

SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo Reports About The Benefits Of Professional Residential Cleaning Services

8/29/2019 (Permalink)

Even with regular tidying and cleaning the typical household vacuum and carpet cleaner are rarely industrial enough for deep thorough cleaning that a home needs now and then. Once in awhile, it’s nice to have someone come in, move the furniture and get those nooks and crannies and overhead shelves and Joe Powers of SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo water damage specialists, has some tips about the benefits of deep cleaning.

When does a home need a deep cleaning? This answer depends on the how often a homeowner or renter wants a cleaning that gets deep into carpets, drapes and upholstery and leaves no damp, soggy spots behind. Professional services can include cleaning the HVAC system, removing strange looking spots from carpets and upholstered furniture, and eliminating persistent odors.

Basically, any time is a good time for a deep, thorough cleaning. Along with the usual “spring cleaning,” or preparing a home for the holidays or a special event, other circumstances include:

  • Preparing the home for sale
  • Cleaning up after tenants or a hoarding situation
  • Periodic deep cleaning to help with allergies and respiratory conditions
  • Cleaning carpets, upholstery, even floors and walls after a prolonged illness
  • Toilet and sewage overflow
  • Water and mold damage
  • Fire damage
  • Trauma or crime scene clean up

Kids spill food and drinks, pets have accidents, and dust, dirt and odd odors invade even the cleanest spaces. Grime (and other surprises) pile up behind refrigerators, stoves and the washer and dryer. Life happens and deep cleaning can range from deeper regular cleaning, to removing biohazard contaminants, and removing trash and junk from a hoarding situation. Biohazard removal, which can include blood, vomit, urine, feces and contaminated materials, is beyond the scope of the average housecleaning service.

A recent article in Health eNews cites the following reasons for keeping a house clean:

  • Lowering stress and fatigue
  • Reducing allergy and asthma symptoms
  • Improving safety
  • Lessening the spread of germs
  • Keeping pests away

The professional teams from companies such as SERVPRO have been thoroughly trained for cleaning up a wide range of situations. These professionals have all of the safety gear required for working with contaminated materials, all of the supplies and equipment for thorough cleaning and decontamination.

Whether the home is just ready for a deep general cleaning, or has been damaged or contaminated, the SERVPRO experts are the people to call.

National Preparedness Month Offers Home and Business Owners an Opportunity to Resolve to be Ready for an Emergency

life ring National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month Offers Home and Business Owners an Opportunity to Resolve to be Ready for an Emergency Local SERVPRO disaster restoration specialist highlights no-cost tools to help property owners prepare and maintain a comprehensive emergency readiness plan.

San Luis Obispo, CA (Grassroots Newswire) August 28, 2019 - No matter where you live or work, emergencies caused by weather, fire, wind, water, and other natural or manmade disasters can strike at any time and are largely unpredictable. SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo reminds San Luis Obispo-area home and business owners that preparing in advance is the best thing you can do to help minimize a disaster's impact on your loved ones and your property. Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month, a time to create, or update, your plan for when disaster strikes.

In the same way that people make resolutions at the New Year, National Preparedness Month is a great time to resolve to create a plan, or review your existing plan, each and every year, said Joseph Powers of SERVPRO® of San Luis Obispo. Everyone needs a comprehensive emergency plan. Business owners also need to plan for business interruption and continuation. But equally importantly, families and businesses alike need immediate access to data like emergency and insurance contacts, shut-off valves, electrical panel locations, and the line of command to authorize work so emergency responders can react quickly and appropriately during the emergency. This month's focus on preparedness is a great incentive for both families and businesses to put a plan in place and review it regularly.

Creating an emergency plan is straightforward, according to Powers. No matter what type of threats exist where you live or work, wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, or other natural or manmade disasters, tools are available from FEMA ( with guidelines for preparing emergency food, water, and medical supplies; planning for special needs; and creating communication and evacuation plans. These tools and others, like the SERVPRO READY app, also help you store essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. Both home and business owners can download the free app at

Local business owners can take an additional preparedness step by designating SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider. SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) to be stored in the READY app.

The key to getting your life or business back on track is timely response after a disaster strikes. That's why it's important to take the time to record and store your information electronically, and then commit to a time like National Preparedness Month to review and update your records at least once each year, said Powers. Remember, filing cabinets and their contents may be inaccessible or even destroyed in an emergency situation, so don't depend on them to keep track of critical insurance, property, or contact information in the event of a disaster. Store your data electronically. If disaster strikes, you'll have the information you need literally at your fingertips.

SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it "Like it never even happened," for both commercial and residential customers. Why you should not clean up a blood spill on your own.

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Accidents and crimes happen every day. Some of these incidents result in blood spills. While it may seem like the right thing to do at the time, victims of violent crimes and accidents should never attempt to clean up areas with blood for several important reasons:

Going through a bloody accident or violence is a traumatic experience that can haunt you for years especially if it's someone you know. Maintaining your emotional and psychological health is important so no further damage is created is critical in traumatic situations. Family members should protect each other during this critical recovery time which means that cleaning up blood yourself will not help heal the people involved. In fact, after a violent experience a person can develop Critical Incident Stress disorder, also known as CIS. OSHA published a CIS Guide about this disorder; it is one of the most important reasons not to clean up blood spills yourself. It’s critical in situations like this to contact a professional team, such as SERVPRO, who will work fast and treat your family with sensitivity and respect during a traumatic experience.

Blood borne pathogens can pose immediate dangers to untrained persons attempting to clean up blood. The Center for Disease Control lists the most concerning blood borne diseases: HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are three of the most common and dangerous. C-Diff and MRSA are also deadly bacteria that are easily transmitted through blood. These pathogens should be considered as deadly and dangerous from either accidents or crimes blood spills which require professional biohazard cleaning services.

SERVPRO can help with any type of blood cleanup including suicide cleanup, homicide cleanup, decomposition cleanup, and industrial accident scenes.

When faced with tragedy, do the right thing: protect your family and loved ones and call in professionals. We are here to help and will make it a priority to assist you in a prompt and timely manner.

"Maintenance tips every new homeowner needs to know."

8/20/2019 (Permalink)

Owning your first house is exciting! You can build a killer deck or paint the walls purple on a whim. When it comes to renovations and personalizing your new home, however, you may find yourself stuck trying to figure out where to begin. The solution to this quandary is quite simple. Before you fire up the cordless drill or contemplate knocking down walls, you’ll want to take care of a few preventative home maintenance tasks first. Home maintenance can be daunting for new homeowners if you’re used to calling a landlord to come fix your problems. But stick to this list of maintenance tips for new homeowners to make sure your bases are covered.

Locate Your Main Water Shut Off Valve

Gallons of water rushing out of a burst pipe can wreak havoc on your drywall, flooring and belongings. In fact, non-weather-related water damage is the second most common homeowner’s insurance claim. So, you need to be able to cut off the flow of water into your home quickly in case of an emergency.

Find your water shut off valve. This is where the water main enters your house. It's often — but not always — located near a street or alleyway. Next, be sure you know how to close it. You may need to purchase a special tool, such as a crescent wrench or "curb stop key", both to access and actually turn the valve.

Find Your Circuit Breaker Box

While you’re searching your closets, basement, garage and front and back yards for your main water shut off valve, be on the lookout for your circuit breaker box. Once you've identified it, determine which fuses control the electricity in various areas of your house and label them accordingly.

Call 811 Before You Dig

Whether you’re planting shrubs or building a new fence, you need to be sure you won’t hit any utilities when you break ground. Call 811, the national dig-safely hotline. They'll send the utility companies out to mark the locations of underground pipes, wires and cables. Not only will you avoid expensive repairs and neighborhood-wide cable outages with 811's help, but you'll also ensure that any work you do on your property will be conducted under much safer conditions.

Check Your Foundation

If rain and melting snow drench the soil around the base of your home, pressure can build up and inflict structural damage on your foundation. Worse, if a leak springs and water come into direct contact with your home's foundation, it can expand any existing cracks and cause expensive problems. To prevent the weakening of your foundation, be sure the ground around your foundation slopes away from your house at least 6 inches over 10 feet. Be sure your gutters are clean and draining properly. Finally, caulk any small cracks in your foundation walls before they have a chance to becomes big deals.

Check Your Attic Insulation

If your attic inspection reveals that the tops of your floor joists are visible, then your home is insufficiently insulated. The recommended amount of insulation for most attics is about 10 to 14 inches of material, depending on the type of insulation used. The attic is the easiest place to add insulation to improve your home’s energy efficiency. A well-insulated house can save you up to 30 percent on your energy bills, increase your property value and keep your family a lot more comfortable.

Proceed Cautiously When Drilling into Walls

Plumbing pipes, duct work, wires and cables are hidden in most homes. Before you power up your drill, use a battery-operated stud sensor to detect studs, cables, ducts and the other vital veins and arteries running just beneath the surface of your walls. Since stud sensors aren’t always 100% accurate, avoid damage by drilling only 1 and one-fourth inches deep – just enough to clear the drywall and plaster but miss most wiring and pipes.

Hire A Professional to Trim Your Trees

Remove dead branches or limbs that could fall on your roof or overhead power lines. This is also a great opportunity to check the integrity of your gutters, eaves and roof vents. Because huge limbs can break and fall unpredictably, leave tree trimming to the pros.
